If you’re hoping to catch a clear view of the next Supermoon, there’s no better place to be than Arizona. According to a new Supermoon Visibility Index created by The Action Network, Arizona ranks #1 in the nation for the best chance of seeing the Supermoon in all its glory.
The index analyzed factors like sky clarity, humidity, elevation, and dark-sky access, then converted them into visibility probabilities and even betting-style odds to show where conditions are most favorable across the country.
Why Arizona Tops the List
Implied Probability: 4.66% (Moneyline: +2046) — the highest in the U.S.
Average Elevation: 4,100 feet — one of the highest statewide averages
Average Clear Days in November: 17.2 — excellent odds for a cloud-free sky
Average November Humidity: 33% — among the driest in the country
Darkness Score: 4.13 / 5 — boosted by one Bortle 1 and seven Bortle 2 dark-sky sites
A spokesperson for The Action Network explained,
“Arizona offers some of the most favorable atmospheric conditions for lunar viewing. The combination of high elevation, dry air, and low cloud cover increases the likelihood of a clear, sharply defined view of the Supermoon.”
From Sedona’s red rocks to the high deserts near Flagstaff, it’s no surprise Arizona dominates for stargazing and celestial events like this.
How to Get the Clearest View
If you’re planning to watch, here are a few tips to make the most of the night:
Watch around moonrise or moonset: The moon appears largest and most dramatic when it’s close to the horizon.
Choose an open horizon: Look for a clear view to the east or west, free from buildings or trees.
Seek dry, stable air: Low humidity and higher elevations make the view sharper and more detailed.
Escape the city lights: Driving just 20–30 minutes away from urban areas can make a huge difference.
Keep your camera steady: Use a tripod or rest your phone on a stable surface to avoid blur.
Arizona’s unique mix of elevation, dry desert air, and world-class dark skies makes it the ultimate destination for skywatchers. Whether you’re snapping photos or just soaking in the glow, this Supermoon is one you won’t want to miss.
