Honoring Veterans in Scottsdale

As Veterans Day approaches, it’s the perfect time to pause and recognize the men and women who have served our country. Scottsdale offers several meaningful places to honor their sacrifices — each one carrying a story of service, remembrance, and community pride.

Scottsdale Memorial for the Fallen

Located at Scottsdale City Hall, this memorial honors the 66 service members from Scottsdale who gave their lives during armed conflicts. Their names are engraved in granite, a lasting tribute to the bravery and dedication of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. It’s a quiet place for reflection and gratitude.

McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park

More than just a beloved local park, McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park has become a gathering point for veterans’ events and memorial observances. The park was founded by World War II U.S. Navy veteran Guy Stillman, and its history and charm make it a fitting place for community connection and remembrance.

The Chaplain Sculpture

Located near Scottsdale City Hall, this sculpture was made possible through the efforts of local veterans’ groups, including the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. It stands as a symbol of faith, healing, and the enduring support within Scottsdale’s veteran community.

Marine Mural

Painted during USMC Week in 2015, the U.S. Marine Corps Mural is a vibrant tribute created by Marines themselves. You’ll find it along the stairs leading from the Civic Center Library parking garage to the Civic Center, honoring service through art and shared pride.

Papago Park POW Escape Tunnel Marker

During World War II, Camp Papago Park held thousands of prisoners of war, including German naval personnel. In December 1944, they dug a 178-foot-long tunnel, leading to the largest POW escape attempt on U.S. soil. Today, a bronze plaque near the Crosscut Canal at Oak Street marks the tunnel’s exit — a quiet reminder of a dramatic and little-known chapter in Arizona’s history.

Thunderbird Field II Veterans Memorial

At the Scottsdale Airport Aviation Business Center, this memorial honors the 5,500 aviation cadets who trained at Thunderbird Field II during World War II. Featuring an authentic Stearman aircraft and a series of indoor and outdoor exhibits, it’s a striking tribute to aviation history and the pilots who took flight in service to our country.

Each of these sites offers a unique way to honor veterans — whether through quiet reflection, learning, or participation in community remembrance. Scottsdale’s tributes remind us that gratitude doesn’t have to wait for Veterans Day — it can live year-round in the places we visit and the stories we share.
